Treating the TMJ
In this video Erik Dalton demonstrates a Myoskeletal Alignment Technique for releasing the jaw by gently massaging the masseter, temporals and mandible. He follows up by demonstrating a very simple technique that has shown to be most effective in treating TMJ tightness, locking of the jaw, headaches and jaw pain. It's a very basic technique. First, make sure the client has all their teeth by asking them during history intake. Of course, ask for their permission to work inside their mouth. Observe the grip with both hands Erik has on the client's head and the position of the body that allows for the correct motion technique to pull on the lower mandible. You really need to understand and feel the barrier concept here to truly know what is happening with the client's body as to maneuver these techniques for release. Watch and pay attention to when the jaw releases and then you let this be an indirect technique - allowing the jaw to find its full range of motion, naturally.
**Disclaimer: You need to make sure that your state allows for working inside the client's mouth, so make sure to check with your state what is allowed and make sure to have some medical supervision as you are learning the technique!
