Emmanuel Faber - Chairman & CEO of Danone - explains why his company has engaged in the Livelihoods-vanilla project in Madagascar, following a field visit of the project in May 2018.
In Madagascar, the Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming is building a resilient vanilla value chain w/ 3,000 family farms since 2017.
In this project, farmers produce, cure & sell their vanilla themselves, contributing to more traceability. The aim is to triple farmers' revenues & increase their food security as the project also focuses on food crops.
Farmers receive a 5-year training from ONG Fanamby to produce quality vanilla & more food crops through sustainable practices like agroforestry.
The Livelihoods-Vanilla project in Madagascar can drive deep transformations in the vanilla value chain because Danone, Firmenich, Mars & Prova have committed to buy all the vanilla produced within the project for 10 years.
