He was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Mosgrove to Merrell and Margaret (McCanna) Slagle. He was a retired captain of the Marine Corps, after serving for 25 years, from 1940 to 1965. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was the recipient of many service awards including the Navy Cross (the nation's second-highest medal), The Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, five Presidential Unit Citations, Combat Action Ribbon, three Korean Presidential Citations, and a Special Commendation from the President of Korea.
