Thousands of Croatians braved the cold to take to the streets of capital Zagreb on Friday in celebration after the national team’s surprise triumph over Brazil in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinal.
After coming back from 0-1 down, courtesy of a Neymar goal, Croatia’s Petkovic shocked the tournament favorites to level the score in the dying minutes of extra time at the Education City Stadium in Qatar.
Croatia’s goalkeeper Livakovic, who made a series of heroic saves to keep his team in the game, made a crucial save which proved to be decisive as Croatia went through, scoring all four shots, with Brazil’s Marquinhos missing.
This will be the only the third time since independence for Croatia to reach the World Cup semifinals, after winning bronze in 1998 and finishing runners-up in 2018, when they lost to powerhouse France.
