Today’s story is one of the saddest and most preventable cases of dental abuse I have ever personally observed. At the age of 25, this young woman (now 31) told her dentist that she would be interested in straightening her smile. Her only complaint was that her teeth on her right side were slightly higher than those on her left side. As it turns out, this asymmetry results from a slight asymmetry in her facial skeleton, not her teeth! But her dentist, being traditionally trained, recommended “fixing” her smile with a full upper arch of crowns.
For those who do not understand what that means, the dentist ground all of the enamel off of every one of her upper teeth and glued 12 ceramic crowns on her teeth. The risks of having this done to your teeth, particularly at a young age, are massive! Immediately she started suffering the consequences. Without enamel protecting your teeth, the potential for sensitivity, pain and nerve death is very high. This is exactly what happened here. First, a premolar died and was treated with a root canal. The pain continued so the root canals were “re-treated.” The pain persisted so the root tip was cut off. When this didn’t work, the tooth was extracted and an excessively long titanium implant was put in. This long implant crossed over the tip of the canine tooth (the “eye tooth). Immediately after the implant was placed she began having pain behind her right eye. During all this her front left central incisor died and she was treated with a root canal. Before this abusive care, she had never even had a cavity! Now she has lost two teeth and more may die in the future.
This kind of destructive care happens every day in thousands of dental practices. If a dentist recommends crowns for you, make sure you know why and ALL the other options available! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s conclusion of this story!
