Music: “Hellraiser” – Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
There is a “Door to Hell”, also known as the Darvaza gas crater, in Turkmenistan. It’s been burning like for over 50 years. It’s 200 feet wide, 70 feet deep, and the temperatures can reach over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. You can walk right up to the edge too, just watch your step.
“The Door to Hell” is not a natural phenomenon. In 1971, Soviet scientists were drilling in the Karakum Desert and hit an unexpected pocket of gas. To prevent the poisonous gas from spreading, they flared the crater with the expectation that it would burn out within a few weeks. Obviously, the gas pocket was much larger than they could have ever imagined because it’s still burning to this day.
In 2013, George Kourounis became the first person to stand at the bottom. He wore a fireproof aluminized suit to take measurements and soil samples. He described the view as a coliseum of fire and the sound as similar to a jet engine right next to him.
In 2022, the president of Turkmenistan announced plans to extinguish the fires, but they’re still not exactly sure how it could be done. So if you want to check it out, you’d better hurry.
