Game: Final Fantasy V
Port: Steam
Shinryu is 1 of the 2 SNES superbosses. He lives inside of a chest in the Crystal area of the Interdimensional Rift. Defeating him earns the Dragon Seal and the Ragnarok Sword. It is also required for a Bestiary entry and an achievement for beating him.
When I first beat this game on the GBA, I did what about 90% of the videos on here did: I Rapid Fire spammed, but I didn't know you could Berserk/Blind/Golem him for a cheap win to stack onto it.
But on this version, I started to have an appreciation for the challenge I threw on myself: No Rapid Fire. It has worked on every boss up till now and it will continue to work regardless. Shinryu is but one testament to this ideology, as well as Gogo. And soon Omega, their upgraded cousins, Neo Ex-Death and especially Enuo will fall.
PLAN
=====
Shinryu is vicious. He opens with Tidal Wave, which can flat out kill a party that isn't wearing Coral Rings. Afterwards, he uses a series of physical attacks in tandem with Breath moves that can leave you in bad spots or flat out vaporize you.
Now what most people do to this boss is cheese a win. Simply apply Berserk via Cannoneer or Bacchus Wine mix, Blind him with Flash or Dark Sigh Mix, then keep Golem up at all times. This will lock Shinryu into constant physical attacking and you can easily shrug off the hits. But where is the fun in that?
Without Rapid Fire, there is still Dragon Lance and Jump together. The attack will more than likely do 2 9999s. If you got patient with stealing, you can get 6 to 8 of them and have all hands to Jump, KOing him in 1 round of Jumps. But I didn't really have the patience to go for 6 of them after getting Ice Shields and the only anti Dragon weapon I had was Apollo's Harp. Plus, Stingray wasn't cooperating with drops.
The alternative for offense is to use Flare Swords on your best weapons and use Aim to combat the 20 Evasion (optional but helps). This will ensure maximum damage. It also doesn't hurt to apply some Turtle Soup to sap his armor for the other fighters. If you wish to go spell, Bahamut, Flare or Meteor are the way to go.
If you think this fight will drag out, it would be wise to mix Goliath Tonics and Dragon Shielding on all your party members if you are not going Berserk. If you are going Berserk, it doesn't hurt to add some Goliath Tonics if you have 2500 HP or more.
