Greeks began voting in general elections on Sunday (22/9). It was forecast to be a tight left-right contest between Prime Minister Costas Simitis's Pan Hellenic Socialist Party (PASOK) and the opposition New Democracy (ND) Party of Miltiades Evert. As the polls opened, the atmosphere in the capital, Athens, was relaxed.
