Lale Andersen (vocal) with Chorus and orchestral accompaniment under the direction of Bruno Seidler-Winkler. Recorded in Berlin on August 2nd 1939.
The song "Song Of A Young Sentry" was written by Hans Leip (lyrics) and Norbert Schultze (music). Leip wrote the lyrics 1915 as a soldier in World War One, Schultze added the music to it in 1938.
This recording with Lale Andersen is the first and original one. It became famous as one of the most popular song recordings of World War Two world wide, played uncountable times at the Soldier Broadcast "Radio Belgrad" from 1941 to 1945 and heard on both sides of the war front - soon established as an anti-war song. Andersen later recorded the song several times again and from 1942 on the song has been recorded also outside Germany in English and other languages by popular artists like Marlene Dietrich, Perry Como, Connie Francis or Suzi Solidor.
Lale Andersen (1905 - 1972) was a German singer/songwriter and actress. With the song "Lili Marleen" she became world famous during World War Two.
This Electrola record is played on an Electrola table top Gramophone, model 130 from ca. 1930!
Here's the English text of the Marlene Dietrich version:
Underneath the lantern
By the barrack gate
Darling I remember
The way you used to wait
'Twas there that you whispered tenderly
That you loved me
You'd always be
My Lili of the lamplight
My own Lili Marlene
Time would come for roll call
Time for us to part
Darling I'd caress you
And press you to my heart
And there neath that far off lantern light
I'd hold you tight
We'd kiss good night
My Lili of the lamplight
My own Lili Marlene
Orders came for sailing
Somewhere over there
All confined to barracks
'Twas more than I could bear
I knew you were waiting in the street
I heard your feet
But could not meet
My Lili of the lamplight
My own Lili Marlene
Resting in our billet
Just behind the line
Even though we're parted
Your lips are close to mine
You wait where that lantern softly gleamed
Your sweet face seems
To haunt my dreams
My Lili of the lamplight
My own Lili Marlene
My Lili of the lamplight
My own Lili Marlene.
