Big Bull down!!!
There is no words that describe how I feel right now, but it’s a combination of excitement, exhaustion, but yet, relief.
After getting back from Colorado, there wasn’t much time to pursue this bull again back in Idaho during archery season, so I was dependent on the October rifle season. There are pros and cons to this time of the year.
Pros: I have a boom stick in my hands.
Cons: Big bulls are breaking away from their cows and getting more quiet every day.
I saw the forecast and it was going to be a downpour, so rain gear was a must. I made my way into the area where I saw him in the past. I was being very cautious on how I approach this bull’s domain. If I bugle, he might run like he always has, or, not bugle at all and I will not have a clue where he is.
As I was hiking in the rain & fog, I would do a very light bugle every so often. Eventually, I heard a faint bugle in the fog, and as expected, he was getting farther and farther away.
I headed that direction until I hit a big drainage. The rain and fog was getting worse and worse, so I built a fire in the alpines. 3 hours later, the fog lifts and I catch a glimpse of something yellow moving on the other side of the draw. Binos up, and immediately recognized that frame. He was feeding on some snow brush all on his own in a small opening, he is no longer with his herd of cows. I ranged him at 400yrds with the Revic. One shot with the @gunwerks 7 Saum, and he disappeared into the timber. I slowly made my way over there and there he laid!!! Mature old bull. He busted a lot of points since I last saw him.
DIY, SOLO, Self filmed. After passing up a lot of young bulls this year, I’m glad it finally paid off. I got this bull aged at 8 years old. Beautiful Idaho Bull Elk.
