Hi, I’m Brandon Steen, an orthopaedic surgeon, shoulder specialists with Florida Orthopaedic Associates. Today I’m going to answer some questions about shoulder surgery. Bob askes, “After shoulder surgery when will I be able to return to playing golf?”
Well, that is a good question Bob and that really depends upon what type of shoulder surgery you have. We do several different types, from clean up procedures to joint replacement to tendon repairs. With minor procedures such as arthroscopy or clean up surgery often time you can return to sport in as little as six weeks. For major procedures like shoulder replacement or tendon repair, we typically recommend six months of recovery to allow for healing before you return to golf or other sporting activities.
DR BRANDON STEEN is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery. He has performed several hundred primary and revision shoulder replacements, reverse shoulder replacements, as well as arthroscopic shoulder and elbow procedures. He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Boston University that led to numerous peer reviewed articles on topics ranging from stem cell therapy to treatment of hip fractures. He is an author of three orthopaedic book chapters on treatment of shoulder and elbow fractures, and the science of bone healing. He graduated from Ohio State University College of Medicine with honors in surgery. Prior to pursuing his medical career, Dr. Steen enjoyed and excelled at sports from a young age. He pitched for the Ohio State Buckeyes, while completing a degree in microbiology and pre-medicine.
