Pit-Fighter, an Arcade conversion to the Commodore 64 by Teque and published by Domark in 1991.
“The No. 1 Arcade Coin-op Hit. Welcome to the meanest, toughest way of making a living! Enter the world of Pitfighting - fighting for money. You’ll have to face thugs like The Executioner, Heavy Metal and Chain Man Eddie. Incredible graphics, digitised from real fighters, and amazing real time sprite scaling, bring you the perfect conversion of Atari’s No 1 Arcade Hit. You’ll never tire of this brutally addictive game!!”
Oh where to start with this one. Whoever wrote the box blurb didn't check out the 8 bit versions and change as necessary. While the original Arcade game was never considered a great game, I did quite enjoy playing the Amiga version back then. The way the game was presented kept me going back even though the main game is a mess and comes down to you just spamming fire and hoping you get the hit in.
The Commodore 64 version is reasonably well presented, but the game is a single load and once you have chosen your character, you are locked in until you reset and reload the game. Even after a game over, you just press fire to restart as the player you chose previously.
Once in game, you notice there is none of the signature sprite scaling going on. The crowds don't interact with you at all and the game moves at a really clunk frame rate. It can be difficult to get into just the right position to make sure your moves connect with the opponent. The opponent has none of those issues and will beat you down given half a chance. The controls are pretty terrible as well and really high latency. Ifen performing the same movements over and over the game will not always see them or perform something totally different instead. You can probably notice I have difficulty getting the stamp move out when the opponent is on the floor.
At the start you get a choice of three characters each with their own special moves. I chose buzz as his more seems easier to pull off and register hurting the opponents more. You get three lives and these have to carry you through the game. There is no energy replenishment in this version. After you defeat the Executioner the game loops round and starts again, only more difficult with 2 opponents to defeat in each round. For some reason force my self through this knowing it will make no difference in the end as the game has no ending and just keeps on looping till you are defeated.
I'm in two minds about this game. While the overall game just sucks, as a C64 game it does seem to be a reasonable conversion given the hardware constraints and is initially well presented. Granted its not as Good as the Arcade or Amiga versions but I think it turned out much better than its ZX Spectrum counterpart.
