Dan O’Neill - Professor, University of Leeds and President of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE)
One of the best talks of the Beyond Growth 2023 conference.
O’Neill researches the relationship between resource use and human well-being. We need to make sure that our research use high enough to meet social needs, but not so high that it goes through planetary boundaries. Countries doing well in the social indicators, do so as by transcending planetary boundaries. We need to transition to a steady-state-economy, by introducing a temporary fase of degrowth in the EU. We can do this by implementing three sets of policies: a) Limit inequality by universal income, universal services and maximizing income, b) Reduce working hours, c) Replace GDP growth indicators by two metrics: Increasing human wellbeing and reducing resource usage.
