𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁:
Life cycle assessment has been used for the environmental sustainability assessment of biomass-based fuels and products. It provides a rigorous and scientific assessment by considering the entire product life cycle and multiple impact categories to avoid problem shifting between life cycle stages and between impact categories, which can often occur when focusing on a single life cycle stage or impact category. However, despite its widespread use, there still remain methodological challenges related, among other things, to system boundaries, functional units, allocation, and carbon accounting. These issues are summarized and the current state-of-the-art vis-à-vis these issues are discussed in a Perspective article entitled “Life cycle assessment for sustainability assessment of biofuels and bioproducts”. Overall, it is concluded that biofuels and bioproducts have advantages over their fossil-based counterparts in terms of environmental impacts, these should be thoroughly investigated using sustainability assessment tools though. Thus, they will play an important role in a sustainable energy transition towards net zero.
