The double u-joint, common in Dodge / Ford trucks & Jeep Wranglers, contains a pivot ball that is prone to drying out over time, which eventually leads to catastrophic damage. As it wears out, it will cause an oblong movement, which is then transferred into the transfer case or transmission, and that can cause the gearing components to snap.
This is a worse case scenario, but likely to happen if you ignore the noise or vibration caused by a failing (but not yet completely failed) double u-joint. Don’t hesitate to bring your truck in for a diagnosis if it starts making new noises.
