(7 May 1976) Henry Kissinger speaking in UNCTAD conference in Nairobi
lead in: the united nations conference on trade and development (unctad) opened in nariobi kenya on wednesday (5 may). on the opening day, the conference was addressed by un secretary general, kurt waldheim, and by the unctad secretary general, the sri lanka delegate gamani corea.
commentary: corea told the 4,500 delegates to the conference that the conference would only be a success if less developed countries were to have their burden of debts lessened and if the price of raw materials were stabilised. corea: "in my view, this conference is of vital important as a political event. relations between states constitute the very heart of the conference. the successful outcome of this session will improve those relationships; an unsatsifactory result= will worsen them. the development issue and how it is dealt with is a factor in international relations. successful handling of this issue is in the interest of all member states. a failure to do so would not only aggravate but would actually foster crises and tensions, turmoil and turbulence throughout the many parts of the third world. i believe that an appreciation of this basic consideration is crucial to the success of this meeting. unless the issues to be discussed here in nairobi are viewed in such a perspective they are not likely to receive the priority which is a precondition for success." on the day following the opening of the conference, dr. henry kissinger the us secretary of state addressed the plenum. his blueprint to erase poverty was well received and drew warm applause. kissinger: "the united states extends its hand to those who will travel with us on this road to a more humane, more just and more valuable future. we must travel it together and we must take another step at this conference. thank you."(applause).
