(27 Sep 2019) Hundreds of protesters ransacked an important commercial street in Port-Au-Prince Friday, looting stores and setting at least one on fire before police moved in to disperse the crowd.
Demonstrators marched up Delmas Avenue in the afternoon, after rampaging during morning hours near the airport and port, destroying one police station near the seaside shantytown of Cite Soleil and setting at least two businesses on fire.
The protesters began looting stores along Delmas during the afternoon, setting up burning barricades and throwing rocks at police trying to disperse the rampaging demonstrators.
Clouds of tear-gas floated above the street, mixed in with smoke from nearby fires, as demonstrators broke through shuttered storefronts to get at the goods inside.
One former diplomat, and member of the opposition, says the protests will not stop until Haitian President Jovenel Moise resigns from office.
The protests are fueled by a gas crisis seriously affecting the country, exacerbating tensions and creating head-aches for businesses and commuters.
The economy is grinding to a halt after weeks of the fuel crisis and daily protests, increasing pressure on the president to step down.
