As far as 5G networks go, there are three variants worth being familiar with. All of these networks are technically 5G and have committed to using many flavors in the future to create more resilient networks, but they all operate slightly differently.
Millimeter-wave: Extreme velocity, but with a drawback
Millimeter-wave is the name given to the initial taste. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have all deployed this technology during the past few years, but Verizon's 5G network is the most notable.
Millimeter-wave, which operates at a significantly higher frequency than previous cellular networks, enables a connection that is several times faster than 1 gigabit per second. But this higher frequency has trouble traveling long distances and going through obstacles like grass or leaves.
Coverage regions for 5G networks may be as small as a single junction outside of specially outfitted stadiums, airports, and arenas. More cellular radios might be strung as a solution, but this isn't possible everywhere. Consider it a supercharged Wi-Fi hotspot for the time being.
