Planting roses at the correct depth is essential to ensure that your roses can establish quickly into the soil and maintain good health. If planted incorrectly roses risk being damaged by strong winds which can rock a rose that has been planted too high. This can not only damage the top of the plant but the roots as well. Roses that are planted too high are also at risk of having exposed roots which can be very damaging to a rose's health. A poorly planted or exposed root system can make it harder for the rose to get sufficient water and nutrients from the soil and in some extreme cases will be in danger of drying out. The roots of a rose should NEVER be visible once planted.
We always recommend that roses are planted at a sufficient depth so that the graft point is an inch below soil level and that they are kept well watered until the roots have had the chance to get fully established. Planting at this depth will also reduce the risk of suckers developing on the plant which can also have a negative effect on the rose's health.
