Gene is a juvenile male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who is around 14 weeks old. He was found hanging on a school fence on the side of a really busy road. I think he's glanced off a car and crash landed then climbed up onto the fence as far as he could.
He is quite severely concussed, slitty eyed, immobile and very very quiet. I was extremely worried about his survival prospects.
I love this Member of Public who spent 40 minutes guarding him until I got there. She had apparently called him Gene before I arrived but didn't tell me till I'd already uploaded the video.
I was calling him Dash in the video, because I'd already named a batty most of the variations on that suburb and local street names and I was waiting for a suitable name to suggest itself..
The MOP, Bianca, is a genetic scientist who named him after her passion, genes - so how could I not call this little one Gene?
Update: on day 2, little Gene is awake and more alert, eating and drinking if he's hand fed, and is progressing much better than I expected.
