It is human nature for individuals to look out for their own interest. But when we are employed by someone else, we now have the obligation to look out for the interests of the company first and to make sure that our own personal interests do not interfere. So, what is a conflict of interest? A conflict of interest occurs when your personal interests and outside activities conflict or compete with the company’s business, objectives, or principles. Those interests can be financial, personal, or they can even relate to your time. Conflicts of interest are a very common kind of ethical problem that gets employees into ethical trouble very quickly. Just remember these two principles: #1. As an employee, you must give your full-time best efforts to your work. Your employer must have your full a. And principle #2: keep your personal business completely separate from your company business.
A very common kind of conflict comes from the temptation to engage in personal business on company time. It can range from managing your online auction business while at work or using company facilities or assets for your own personal business. Whatever it is you should not engage in an outside business that diverts your time or attention away from your duties. If you are considering (or currently have) outside employment, consider the following general guidelines. The personal business may not be done on company time. Any outside activities such as a second job or self-employment must be completely separate from your company work.
