This is the long-awaited sequel to the video about Russian music. This time we listen to the Romanov era: from the reformist Tsar Peter the Great to the "ragtag Tsar" Nicholas II.
The transformations of the Peter the Great era, which took place in the late 17th century and the first quarter of the 18th century, had the greatest impact not on the economy or even on the political structure of Russia, but on the cultural life of the upper circles of society. The influence of the church weakened, and secular culture, which had slowly made its way in the previous century, surged forward and gained a foothold in the upper circles. In all forms of art, like mushrooms after the rain, new genres and trends grew. Music, of course, was no exception. Liturgical church songs were replaced by panegyrics and vivat cantos for solemn and festive events. The theatrical arts also developed rapidly, as did the opera. Later there appeared symphonic and chamber concerts, and home musicianship developed.
While in the first half of the 18th century Russian secular musical culture was quite secondary, as it had fiercely borrowed Western European trends, from the time of Elizabeth Petrovna the traditions preserved in the church and folk musical cultures began to gradually penetrate into secular music. The cocktail of acquired innovations and homegrown antiquity produced its own school with unique traditions, the achievement of which was the work of Glinka, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and many other great composers.
In addition to their works, the video includes secular romances, hymns, folk and revolutionary songs that reflect the social moods of different eras. The music, as well as the images in the video sequences, were chosen in accordance with the author's personal preferences.
