To his to and a half million Instagram followers, he went by the name Ray Hushpuppi, an influencer who boarded helicopters from his Dubai seafront apartment, flaunted luxury cars, designer clothing and a lavish globetrotting lifestyle.
His real name is Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, an instagram celebrity who regularly posted pictures and videos of his lavish spending on exotic cars, watches and designer clothes, bags from luxury brands like Gucci, Fendi and Louis Vuitton. He regularly took photo of himself boarding helicopters and private jets, with celebrity, footballers and politicians.
On SnapChat he referred to himself as the "Billionaire Gucci Master" and claimed that he was a real estate developer.
His apartment at the Palazzo Versace was raided in June 2020 in an operation code-named Fox Hunt 2 Abbas was arrested alongside eleven other individuals in simultaneous raids. Dubai Police officers seized millions in dirhams in cash equivalent to forty million us dollars, 13 luxury cars, 21 laptops, 47 smartphones, 15 memory storage devices, 5 external hard drives and 800,000 emails of potential victims. Abbas was extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.
The arrest was part of an FBI investigation that indicted Abbas of being a 'key player' in a transnational cybercrime network that provided “safe havens for stolen money around the world. He was flown to Chicago then transferred to Los Angeles to face accusations.
Friends and relatives, of the 38 year old man claim that he attended a secondary government school education in Ikorodu and that he started out as a second hand clothes trader in Lagos.
That was the beginning, many years before he started claiming to be a billionaire property developer. Many considered it a a rags to riches story, seeing a person’s rise from a state of poverty to one of great wealth. But how did he build his wealth?
The federal affidavit alleges that Abbas’s extravagant lifestyle was financed through hacking schemes that stole millions of dollars from major companies in the United States and Europe. According to the statement released by the Justice Department, apart from conspiring to launder hundreds of millions of dollars through cyber crime schemes. Abbas took part in a “North Korean-perpetrated cyber-enabled heist from a Maltese bank in February 2019.”
The Justice Department referred to the attack as “a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution.” According to the FBI, Abbas known as Ray Hushpuppi, was also involved in a fraudulent scheme to steal 100 million pounds sterling from an English Premier League football club. If convicted of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, Abbas may face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
