Philanthropists, donors and foundation leaders: Don’t get caught in the “scaling” trap unprepared! Scaling a nonprofit organization might be exactly what’s needed and desired, but much can go wrong. Not every philanthropy idea is a good one. There are many pitfalls and mistakes family foundations, corporate foundations, and other donors make on the road to scaling. Do your research, have honest conversations with your grantees, and if everyone agrees that scaling is the right thing to do, invest in your grantees to ensure success! They might need funding for research, consultants, coaching, technology, communications, staff recruitment and development, evaluation, etc.
