The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany. It is 2962 metres high and lies in the Alps, southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The northern half of the Zugspitze with the summit is in Bavaria. The south, however, is in Tyrol, a province of Austria.
You can get to the Zugspitze either from Tyrol or Bavaria by cable car. Or you can take the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which goes all the way to the summit. There are stations on the summit where you can observe the weather and the environment. Many tourists go there.
There are three glaciers on the Zugspitze: the Höllentalferner, the Southern Schneeferner and the Northern Schneeferner. The Höllentalferner and the Nördlicher Schneeferner are even the largest in Germany. However, the glaciers are shrinking because the earth's climate is getting warmer.
