Matthew West often takes the inspiration for his music from lettters he receives from fans. This is the prodigal daughter story behind "Love Stands Waiting", from Matthew's website -
David loves his daughters. He told me that when they were little, he would always say to them every morning, "Don't forget who's child you are." He said that every morning his girls would respond to his challenge by smiling and pointing up to Heaven. But over the years, one of his daughters turned away from a personal relationship with Christ and wound up walking a very difficult road far away from her family and her faith. Troubled by an abusive relationship and the ties of addiction, David and his wife prayed unceasingly and hoped they would see the day when their daughter would return. Any time he would get the chance to speak with her, David would say, "remember who's child you are." But this time her response was different. "I'm not that little girl anymore, daddy."
But one night, David received the phone call they had prayed for. She asked if she could come home. Of course they said yes, and welcomed her home with open arms and much rejoicing. It has taken some time for life to be healed, and the pieces to be put back together. But when I spoke with David on the phone to tell him he and his daughter inspired a song on the new record, he told me that at one point he wondered if he'd see his daughter again. But then he said, "Last Sunday, I'm standing on stage at church singing in the worship team and my daughter is standing next to me singing!"
A prodigal returns, and there is much rejoicing. This is a song for all the parents out there who are holding out hope for the return of their child who has gone astray. Let David's story inspire you to keep praying, keep holding on, and trust that God is pursuing every life.
