I recently went to Northern Michigan with Connor to visit his family. His parents, being both outdoorsy and culinarily-inclined, offered to make us a Fish Boil! I had never experienced a Fish Boil before, and let me tell you -- it was an event!!
In this video, Connor and I walk you through the process ... culminating in the epic "boil over" and a truly satisfying meal.
Here's how you make a Fish Boil:
Ingredients:
-3-4 lbs. small red potatoes
-8 ears of sweet corn, husked
-3-4 lbs. fish -- we used a Michigan favorite, whitefish
-salt, to taste (I'd use at least a cup)
-butter, to taste
-lemon juice, to taste
(Optional side dishes are cole slaw and rye bread).
Directions:
First prepare a fire outside. Then put a big pot filled to the top with water over the fire. Let it come to a boil.
Meanwhile, prepare the red potatoes, corn and fish. As soon as the water starts to boil, add the salt. (You really can't go too heavy on this, in my opinion).
Then add the potatoes. 10 minutes later, add the corn, then add the fish. 8 minutes later, dump some diesel fuel on the fire (be careful! make sure an adult is there!), this will cause the boil over and will get rid of the impurities that raised to the top of the pot. Once the flame dies down, take out all the food!
Slather generously with butter and lemon juice--and ENJOY! :)
