"Guard Down" is a meditation on boundaries and self-preservation in the context of human relationships. Maybe the most striking aspect of the song is how empowering Claud makes its messaging feel. As Claud's repeated pleas of, "Don't let your guard down." progress, they sound less like pleas and more like affirmations. It's only in the coda that Claud lays their longing for the New York summer they shared with the song's subject fully bare, in the safety of their bedroom.
