(6 Nov 2013) A 39,000-year-old wooly mammoth found in Siberia is set to go on public display in Taiwan on the weekend.
The mammoth, called Yuka, was found entombed in 2010 inside the arctic ice of Siberia, with its soft tissue and blonde-red wool preserved.
It is believed to have been about 10-years-old when it died.
Exhibition organiser Yoshihiro Ota said the mammoth is valuable because of how much of it is intact.
"Even its brain is well preserved. Russian authorities already examined its brain and preserved it for further research. The other important aspect is that other mammoths found before Yuka were found with only partial remains, only bones or skulls. Most mammoths found with a complete body were only babies. This is the first time we found a young mammoth with the whole body," he told reporters, as workers prepared Yuka for display.
Yuka's body and legs that were damaged and some of its internal organs were missing, leading to a speculation that it may have been prehistoric humans butchering the carcass.
Yuka was first displayed to the public in Japan earlier this year.
Also on the show is the remains of 39,000-year-old frozen Rhinoceros called Kolyma, named after a river in Siberia where it was found.
The wooly rhino has a long body, short legs and thick skin.
