Welcome to Paint like a Pro! In this episode, Resene paint expert Murdo Shaw guides you through the process of prepping and painting weatherboards.
Murdo shares a few tricks of the trade to have you painting like a pro. He tells you the best tools to use, as well as step-by-step techniques.
You will need:
• Resene Moss & Mould Killer
• Resene Paint Prep and Housewash
• Scrubbing brush
• Bucket
• Water
• Dust mask
• Safety glasses
• Gloves
• Dust brush
• Paint scraper
• PAL putty knife
• Sika gap filler
• Resene EzyFill GP
• Cloth
• PAL sanding block
• 100 grit sandpaper
• Paint can opener
• Resene paint stirrer
• Drop cloth
• Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat
• Resene paint pots
• Paint brushes of varying widths
• Resene exterior paint in your selected finish and colour: Resene Hi-Glo (gloss finish); Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss finish); Resene Lumbersider (low-sheen finish); Resene Lumbersider Matt (matte finish).
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Before you start, make sure you're wearing safety glasses and gloves when prepping your surfaces. If it's been a while since you last washed your home and there is moss and mould present, use Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Check your weatherboards for chalkiness – if there is a chalky residue present, give your weatherboards a good scrub with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Rinse well with clean water.
2. Scrape and remove any loose or flaking paint using your paint scraper. Lightly sand the length of the weatherboards with your sanding block and 100 grit sandpaper, smoothing out any remaining imperfections. Using your dust brush, wipe away all sanding dust.
3. Spot prime any bare or exposed areas of the weatherboard with Resene Quick Dry. Fill any gaps with a flexible gap filler (Murdo uses Sika Gap Filler) and wipe away excess with a damp cloth. If there are any holes or further imperfections you would like filled, use Resene EzyFill GP. Lightly sand the areas you’ve filled with contract filler and wipe away all sanding dust.
4. Now it is time to prime all your weatherboards with a single coat of Resene Quick Dry.
5. Once the primer has dried you can apply your choice of Resene exterior paint in your selected Resene colour and finish. As Murdo says, “It’s just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears – you pick your favourite and away you go!”
Well done, you now know how to paint weatherboards!
