Here is a tutorial about the Blender feature Shadow Catcher for compositing. You can use it for objects that just renders the casted shadows but are not visible in the scene.
In former versions of Blender you had to use a separate render layer for this which is now obsolete with this feature.
The feature is available in the latest build of Blender 2.78c:
