Highways across California are shut down because of heavy mountain snow. It's the worst winter storm in years for Southern California.
Blizzard Warnings were issued for the mountain ranges north of Los Angeles, some for the first time on record. Interstate 5 between L.A. and Bakersfield closed early Friday as the snow piled up.
One day earlier, it was cold enough that snow fell on the Hollywood Sign. The high mountains are expecting a few feet of snow before it's all said and done.
The powerful storm spent the week sliding down the West Coast, originating from the Arctic air parked over the Northern Rockies. Earlier in the week, Seattle, Portland, and the coastal ranges of Oregon and California picked up snowfall from the storm. Portland saw it's 2nd heaviest one-day snow total on record. In Northern California, snow closed I-5 into Oregon and I-80 across the Sierras into Nevada.
Of course this all began with record-setting cold in the Inland Northwest. Spokane on Wednesday had it's coldest high temperature for that date, 16 degrees.
The storm will track inland over Southern California this weekend. Winter storm warnings for the weekend extend all the way to the border with Mexico. Cold air on the north side of the system will lead to frost and freezes around the San Francisco Bay. Heavy rain is already leading to lowland flooding beneath the blizzard in the mountains on Friday night.
More snow is in the forecast across the West through the weekend and early next week.
