A hairdresser has gone viral after sharing a video of a child’s horrific head lice infestation on TikTok – which led to the child being taken away by Child Protective Services (CPS) and having her head shaved.
Rachel Maroun, 21, from Sydney, Australia, works as a head lice technician and shares clips of her most severe cases online.
One recent case was that of a little girl, who she estimates was aged between six and seven, who came in with a headscarf on and showed her the infestation – which was the worst Rachel had ever seen.
The child was later taken to hospital and needed to have her head shaved.
“She was very quiet and showed me how the lice were biting down her neck and back, since there was little to no space for them to crawl freely in her hair,” Rachel told Jam Press.
“Immediately when I saw her I knew something was wrong and that this would be the biggest case of lice I’ve had to face.
“I’m used to extreme lice infestations but was definitely not prepared for what I saw.
“I was told that the child had been dealing with the lice for several months and that treatments were being applied.
“But my professional opinion is that this was an extended lice case where nothing was being done to combat it.
“I could tell the girls hair had not been brushed in months as it had formed deep dreadlock like matting that would have been impossible to apply any type of lice solution onto.
“It takes a very long time for lice to reach the point of severe infestation. It takes an even longer amount of time for hair to go that matted. This is sadly the result of child neglect.”
In the video, which she shared with her three million followers, Rachel films the child’s hair, which can be seen crawling with lice.
She says: “This poor child has obviously had lice for a very long time. Her hair has not been brushed in ages and has turned into one big ball of lice and knots, which meant that I called Child Protective Services right away.”
Showing a clip of her usual method used on a previous client, Rachel wets the hair and applies a conditioning treatment before combing through the hair.
Using glass, she “pops” the lice, pressing down to kill them.
Sadly, this wasn’t an option for the child and would have been too painful due to the matted condition of her hair.
She continues to say: “In usual cases, it’s just a matter of combing through the hair section by section and popping the lice, but I didn’t want to put a metal comb anywhere near this poor baby’s hair.
“You can even see the lice were drinking blood out of her forehead.
“This broke my heart to see but I’m really glad she’s OK now.”
The post went viral, racking up 3.7 million likes and being viewed 37 million times.
One person commented: “Watching her wipe her tears made me have to do the same thing. I’m so sad for her, but glad to hear she is safe.”
“I’m so so thankful that you stood up for her and protected her,” another user said.
Someone else added: “I’m so happy to hear the first thing in this video was you calling Child Protective Services. I gasped seeing this poor girl’s state. She deserves better.”
Other users commented there was “no excuse” for the girl’s condition, while other people said their heads were itchy after watching the footage.
Other people described the post as “heartbreaking” and “traumatic”.
“I feel sick,” said another user.
Someone else commented: “I can’t believe how upset I am over this video! I literally just want to cry and scream.”
After removing the lice infestation, Rachel updated her followers to explain the child had been picked up by CPS and was taken to hospital.
She sadly had to have her head shaved due to the severe matting of her hair.
Rachel said: “Although it was not the finished result anyone was hoping for, I know she feels a whole lot better with a fresh start so her scalp can start to heal.
“I could tell the lice were draining more than just her blood, she looked sick and was covered in lice bites over her body.”
Filming the hair for a follow-up post, Rachel explained the child’s hair had been detaching from the scalp.
She says: “This left no space for the lice to move anywhere so they had to go on her hands and her neck to drink blood out of her body like that.”
The child’s hands and neck can be seen covered in red bite marks.
Rachel continues: “Also there was a smell that leads me to believe there was some kind of mould in the matting here.
“It’s very rare I see cases like this but it always breaks my heart.”
