Subtractive synthesis is a synthesis technique based on the alteration of specific frequencies with a filter. Generally, we use wavetable synthesis (or sometimes other means) to create complex waveforms which we then sculpt with our filters--removing frequencies that we don't want, and perhaps boosting frequencies that we want to emphasize.
The "basic synth" is a simple configuration of the oscillator, filter and amplifier modules, functioning as a kind of analog to acoustic instruments, combining the production of sound (oscillator) altered by the resonant body of the instrument (filter).
