Ganesh is one of the five prime Hindu deities also known as Vigneshwar, one who removes the obstacles. For this reason he is worshiped at the beginning of any ceremonies. He was born to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Skanda is his younger brother. He is depicted as an elephant headed god with a big belly, often riding on a Mouse as his Vahan.
