The concept of the challenge is that university teams must design, build and race flooded submarines piloted by a scuba diver, who must be fully enclosed within the hull of the machine. All of the propulsion power must be provided by the diver during the race.
Top science and marine engineering students from around the world have spent the last 11 months designing, building and testing their human-powered submarines. This week all their efforts will be tested at QinetiQ's Ocean Basin where teams race their human-powered submarines underwater against the clock around a demanding slalom course in this unique sporting and engineering challenge.
