PS5 Extended External Storage - NVME vs SATA SSD.
I tested a Samsung EVO 850 1TB SATA SSD External drive in a generic USB C Enclosure against the WD BLUE SN550 1TB NVME SSD in an Orico USB C 10GBps Enclosure with a 10Gbps FasGear Cable.
The results were really interesting. Both drives copied a 24GB game to the internal SSD in about 3 minutes. I think this means that there is a predefined limit to which the PS5 can read PS4 data.
What's more interesting is that the PS5 was able to copy files to the external SSD's much faster than it was able to read them. Again we could not achieve the 10Gbps speeds but the SATA SSD took about 1min 30 seconds and the NVME drive took 1 min 10 seconds, I think with a better SATA 500MB/s enclosure we will also get close to the 1 Min 10 Second mark as I really do believe the PS5 has a hard coded limit as to how fast it can read or write PS4 data. I believe this is the case as in theory if we achieve 500MB/s a 24GB game should copy in 48 seconds, but this heavily depends on number of files and their respective sizes, so the 1 min 10 seconds shows we are close to this and should be the same on any good external SSDgreater than or equal to 500MB/s.
Hope you found this useful, please feel free to ask any questions.
