Hanon exercises should have been numbered among the saints for all the suffering they had to endure.
On the one hand they are used by millions of beginner pianists as technical but musically useless exercises, like a fitness equipment.
On the other hand they are heavily criticized by many musicians that are deeply convinced that these exercises are very primitive, boring, and mechanical, thus are rather malicious when it comes to developing musicality and creativeness.
But I believe that if you really know what you are doing, these exercises are as good as any others for both explaining basics of piano efficiency, and developing musical expression.
It DOESN'T mean that I am a huge fan of them and do assign them to all my students. Indeed, I give them only to some students when such a need arises, and even then we work on both technical and musical aspects, making sure that one complements another.
So, creating this course I solely avoid judgemental thinking and common stereotypes, and feel confident enough to use even such seemingly primitive exercises in order to explain a substantial amount of technical and musical aspects.
