Justine is Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. A graduate of France's Universite de Besancon and Dartmouth College, she earned a Master's in
Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh and dual Ph.D.s in Linguistics and Psychology from the University of Chicago. Her research interests focus on
deconstructing the linguistic and nonverbal elements of human conversation
and storytelling in such a way as to embody machines with conversational, social, and narrative intelligence. She developed the Embodied Conversational
Agent which is a virtual human capable of interacting with people, is recipient of the Edgerton Prize from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was honored with the "Women of Vision" award from the Anita Borg Institute, and is a member of the World Economic Forum's "brain trust".
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
