The Eagle's Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus in German, was built by the Nazi Party as a gift for Adolf Hitler's 50th Birthday. Used as a venue for government and social meetings, it wasn't much loved by Hitler himself. His fear of heights, concerns about getting stuck there due to bad weather, and the thin mountain air mean he only made 14 documented visits. Nowadays it's a restaurant and tourist attraction. You can visit on a day trip from Munich, or Salzburg, which is just over the border in Austria, and far closer.
