MPI Offshore, an offshore installation service firm owned by Van Oord, last week (18-10-2021) accidentally dropped three wind turbine blades into the sea, while conducting scheduled maintenance at Vattenfall's Ormonde wind farm in the Irish Sea, off the UK.
According to the incident report, MPI Offshore's MPI ADVENTURE jack-up vessel last week jacked up alongside Ormonde B01 wind turbine and dropped three 61 m turbine blades and a blade clamping tool weighing 3000-3100kg overboard.
A notice to mariners dated October 18 said that the dropped items were in the water adjacent to MPI ADVENTURE near the wind turbine generator B01, and that debris - glass fiber fragments and part of the blade - had fractured off from one blade, with a potential to reach the shore.
Along with the three turbine blades weighing 126 tonnes and blade clamping tool weighing around 3 tonnes, the hub containing three pitch motors, batteries, four electrical cabinets, grease pumps and other components was also dropped.
Debris has fractured off from one of the blades and will likely reach the shore.
According to Vattenfall, work on cleaning up the debris is now underway and local people have been immediately warned about the floating debris that is likely to be washed up on the beaches. Most of the debris are glass fibre fragments and parts of the blade.
There were no injuries nor damage to Van Oord’s vessel reported after the incident, according to Vattenfall, which also said the vessel is still on the site with an investigation into the cause of the incident now ongoing.
