In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is teaching to you the golden middlegame rules that every chess player needs to know.

The first principle in the middlegame: You need a plan, so you have to find the general direction of play which usually means you have to ask two major questions: Where to play and what to do? The factors that helps you to answer these questions are:
- „The King position“: In the example it was a opposite side castling position. One of the typical plans is to attack your opponent’s king, typically with the help of your pieces and pawns. The attack with the pieces works well if your opponent has already some vulnerabilities in the position but in the concrete position of the example both sides had no weaknesses, so the pawn attack will be much more efficient. Push them forward in order to open up files, diagonals and critical squares for the pieces.
- The other way to come up with a plan is to analyze the pawn structure. You can think about pawn minorities and majorities e.g. pawn majority on the kingside. If you have a pawn majority on one side, the idea is to push these pawns on the side where you have the majority.
- Another great factor is the bishop pair. The bishop pair can be very beneficial in open positions.
Another principle: Material. The material in the middlegame stage should be evaluated only in connection with the activity of pieces. You don’t have to evaluate the material itself. Only compare the material in respect to the activity of the pieces. Sometimes you can sacrifice some pawns just to activate all your pieces and the piece activity will just define the great advantage.
Knowing these principles will help you to master the middlegame stage.
