French troops march into Alsace-Lorraine and local citizens greet them, near end of World War I.
Allied armies advance into territory held by the Germans, near the end of World War 1. After 47 years of German rule, citizens of Alsace-Lorraine welcome victorious French troops as they march through a decorated arch. They parade behind a brass band, along streets lined with well-wishers. Sreets are filled with Alsatians in traditional costumes. Alsatians pull down an equestrian statue of the Kaiser and beat on it with hammers. When Armistice Day arrives, firing ceases and German and French troops pose quietly looking at one another. People parade in the streets, along with marching troops. Location: Alsace-Lorraine. Date: November 1918.
