Prime Minister Boris Johnson offers an apology to a reporter's mother for his unkempt hair, while on a trip to Openreach in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

It comes as fears are mounting that England could be placed under a third lockdown after Christmas as cases surge across London and the South East.

Boris Johnson has refused to rule out another national shutdown, telling reporters during a visit to Manchester this morning: “We’re hoping very much that we will be able to avoid anything like that. But the reality is that the rates of infection have increased very much in the last few weeks.”

The latest grim figures come as nursing chief Dame Donna Kinnair warned that “travelling and family visits" during the festive period could spark an “unrelenting tsunami” of infections, meaning “we would begin 2021 in the worst possible way.”
