Internet connections are dependent on thousands of kilometers of underwater cables that go in a crisscross pattern across the seas of the whole globe. Optical fiber is used in the construction of these lines. How crucial is it for us to be able to access services like Google, Facebook, or WhatsApp almost everywhere on the planet? There are more than 420 undersea cables across the globe, with a combined length of around 1.3 million kilometers. Southern Europe has connections with 45 underwater cables, ten of which link to Spain and nine of which connect to Portugal.
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy knocked down critical exchanges where underwater cables connected North America and Europe. Every year, there are around 200 incidents of this kind. The vast majority of cable failures are caused by inadvertent human activity. Businesses that have a significant reliance on subsea cables are aware of the shortcomings of the industry's infrastructure. However, most people are not aware of these shortcomings.
Cables are "indispensable" for the transmission of a substantial volume of data with a very minimal degree of lag time. According to Google Cloud, having a dependable, robust, and high-capacity network is more crucial than ever. Laying a cable is a procedure that takes a number of years and costs millions of dollars. The voltage that runs through the cable may reach up to 10,000 volts. These fibers are protected by additional layers of plastic, armor plate, and stainless steel so that they cannot be severed.
Researchers claim that attackers could take down parts of a network and force people onto cables they already controlled. This could happen potentially without the target even being aware that their communications were being exposed.
