Aruba, a Caribbean island somewhat larger than Washington, DC, is located 18 miles (28.9 kilometres) off the coast of Venezuela.
Aruba's initial residents were the Arawak Indians. The island was first discovered by Spain in 1499, and it was claimed by the Netherlands in 1636.
