One of the tallest structures at the site was the No. 3 Headframe, which was situated on the north side of the site. The structure was a rectangular-shaped, reinforced concrete building, which housed the hoisting equipment for the No. 3 Shaft. The building was 68 ft. in length by 46 ft. in width with an overall height of approximately 257 ft.
Due to the height of the structure, which exceeded the safe working range of conventional demolition equipment, Delsan-A.I.M. employed control drop methods using explosives in order to demolish the structure. This method of demolition is designed to cause the rapid progressive failure of the structure in a predetermined direction in a controlled and secure manner.
The structure was successfully brought down on January 13, 2015. The remaining demolition and clean-up of the fallen structure was completed at ground level, using excavators equipped with hydraulic hammer, shear, grapple and/or magnet attachments.
