A trio of snow leopard was sighted during our last (January 2022) snow leopard expedition to Kibber wildlife sanctuary of Spiti valley.
The 2220 square kilometres area around Kibber village of Spiti was declared as wildlife sanctuary by Indian government in 1992. Kibber and 12 other villages located along the perimeter of the sanctuary forms its southern boundary. Kibber WLS is also a part of 16th Cold Desert biosphere reserve (declared a biosphere reserve in 2009).
Wildlife found in Himalayan cold deserts (notably in Kibber WLS) are:
1. Snow leopard
2. Himalayan ibex
3. Blue sheep (bharal)
4. Tibetan wolf
5. Red fox
6. Number of bird species
Along of Pin Valley National Park, Kibber wildlife sanctuary has been identified as “Important Bird Area” by Birdlife International.
