#13 It’s All Greek To Me!!
What does “Gringo” means and where does it come from? You will be very surprised to know that most may have those answers wrong! It did not come from Mexico and the green military outfits of the US as in “GreenGo” and therefore described Americans. It actually comes form Spain!! Here is what happened, in the 1700s it was used to describe foreigners who where very hard to understand… like with an accent, but worse… as if they were speaking Greek or “griego” in Spanish. it eventually evolved into gringo!
#12 The Unlucky One!
There are times while at work or with friends that you buy the lottery together. But what would happen if you decided that day not to participate in the purchase? and that was the day you could have won? This actually did happen in the small town of Sodeto near Barcelona in Spain in 2012….. The entire population of the small farming town but a foreigner who unfortunately did not buy a ticket. He said he was lucky as well since he wanted to sell a property and had 2 offers next day!!! It’s a Win-Win for all!
#11 The Tallest Human Pyramid!
When you head to Spain you must head to one of the human tower events that occur in Tarragona. This festival makes sure to take your breath away with up to 10 floors high pyramids made entirely of humans, one after another climb one another until it cannot go any higher. If they want to win, they must assemble and disassemble the human pyramid with out any one falling…. Not an easy task… specially at such hights.
#10 A Tooth Thief
Laying in bed after loosing a tooth meant someone was coming to bring you something in exchange for your tooth. In the US is the Tooth fairy but in Spain a little rodent called “el Ratoncito Perez” comes to visit!! Its popularity had spread to Latin America where El raton Perez goes by the name of El Raton Miguelito or tooth mouse in Peru and Chile. Do you remember who came to visit you?

There have been many downturns in the economy around the world and many US homes since 2008 and forward where foreclosed. The banks had to sell them for less so to get some of the money back form the loss. In the US for example, you file bankruptcy, you may lose your home car and so on but are forgiven from the debts and may even be eligible for government help. Spain? has a different idea of mortgage debt. If you foreclose on your property, you must work to pay the bank back. According to the government, they don’t want their banks and citizens to experience the mayhem the US lived. …. So, No exceptions, no appealing… Don’t Even Ask
#8 A Fiery Horse!!
Fire, music and fun…No Spanish celebration seems to be lacking either fireworks of a big fire, in the video about fireworks we talked about El toro embolado and how a bull runs through the city carrying fire on its horns. Well this celebration that takes place in San Bartolome de Pinares has been dedicated to animals for over 500 years. And it involves a very large fire used like an obstacle course were this time horses participate! Celebrating the patron saint of animals San Anthony of Abbott also known as Anthony the Great, the Luminaria festival is meant to bless the animals, the smoke purifies and blesses. The priest blesses the animals before they jump the flames. No worries, if the horse does not want to jump, it will just pass by…

I hope this has never happened to you but have you ever tried to manipulate something and it ends up going the total opposite of what you wanted? Well that’s what happened in Spain during the Fascist dictatorship of Francisco Franco. In the 1975 right before the dictator’s demise, he reinstituted the monarchy and chose Juan Carlos I to be his successor and king of Spain. King Juan Carlos I ended up dismantling the Francoist regime and institutionalizing democracy!! By 2008, The King of Spain became the most popular ruler. Now his son Felipe VI is the king. What would you do if you were king of queen?
