Franeker is one of the eleven historical cities of the province of Friesland, Netherlands. It was founded around 800 as a Carolingian stronghold and received city rights in 1374. In the 15th century, Albert, Duke of Saxony established himself in Franeker. The city appeared for a time to be growing into the primary city of Friesland, but was eventually overshadowed in this role by Leeuwarden. From 1585 to 1811, the city housed the University of Franeker, which was the second Protestant university in the Netherlands. It was closed shortly after the incorporation of the Kingdom of Holland into the French Empire.
The first stone of the Franeker City Hall, built in Frysian renaissance style, was laid in 1591. Above the main entrance the coat of arms of Friesland is shown, and along the leadlights on the first floor, another 27 coats of arms are placed. It is a national monument and part of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites.
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is an orrery built from 1774 to 1781 by Eise Eisinga, a wool comber and amateur astronomer, to explain a conjunction of the planets and to help mitigate local fears of what would happen during the planets' alignment. Built in Eisinga's own living room, it is one of the oldest operating orreries in the world. The museum consists of the planetarium room, a screening room where documentaries are shown, and special exhibits based on modern astronomy. Other parts on permanent display are Eisinga’s former wool combing establishments and a collection of historical astronomical instruments. Historical astronomical instruments in the collection include Georgian telescopes and an 18th century octants and tellurium, an educational model of the Sun, Earth and Moon. The orrery was nominated by the Dutch government for UNESCO World Heritage status.
The 14th century Martini Church was originally dedicated to Saint Martin. The pseudo-basilica has thirty pillars between the nave and aisles and twelve pillars around the choir. The Martini Church is the only medieval church in Friesland with an ambulatory.
